How to Access Compuserve Using Mo-Net.Com

Note:It is possible to access Compuserve using your Mo-Net.Com connection. If you have a CIS account already set up, follow the instructions below. If you do not have an account but wish to start one, you will need to obtain their software. While not as plentiful as AOL disks, you can find Compuserve software in many computer magazines, or you can go to www.compuserve.com and download the software free from their web site. As with AOL, you will need to install the software, allow it to connect you and complete registration, then sign off and follow the below instructions.

The following is for CIS versions PRIOR to 3.0.1

Delete all WINSOCK.DLL files in the compuserve directory, C:\CSERVE and all of its subdirectories.

  1. Sign on to Mo-Net as usual, using your existing dial-up networking connection.
  2. Start your CIS software.
  3. From the menu, select SPECIAL in session settings.
  4. Select WINSOCK from the CONNECTION drop down box.
  5. Select DIRECT from the DIAL TYPE drop down box.
  6. Click on LAN button.
  7. Set HOST NAME to compuserve.com.
  8. Leave HOST IP ADDRESS blank.
  9. Click OK
  10. Sign on

For CIS version 3.0.1, and any updates they may offer, DO NOT delete any files from your system. Simply start Mo-Net, then bring up Compuserve. Make sure you have chosen "dial up net" as your connection option, and have the correct answers to the network questions.

Remember to disconnect from Mo-Net when you are finished with your CIS session.

I STRONGLY recommend you do not use CIS for internet access. The browser is inferior and CIS still charges per hour past your free time. If you wish to browse the web, use newsgroups, or do anything beyond Compuserve's own content, use your local internet software such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.
