WARNING!!!
DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR MODEM
TO V.90 UNTIL YOU HAVE DETERMINED
THAT YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS
PROTOCOL. DOING SO MAY CAUSE SOME
MODEMS TO ACTUALLY SLOW DOWN!!!
We are proud to announce that we are now offering 56k
V.90 service in
Monett. However, you need to be aware of the limitations
associated with
this technology.
Due to the way Southwestern Bell has engineered and
installed residential
phone lines in Monett, there will be a number of users
who will not be
able to take advantage of this technology. A general rule
of thumb is
that if you live within the city limits of Monett, you
will probably be in
luck. However, if you live outside the city limits, you
are probably
being served by Bell through what is called a SLIC96,
which is a
multiplexer that combines up to 96 phone lines into just
4 wires.
This in itself isn't a problem, as SLIC96 units are
digital themselves.
The problem occurs back at Bell's Central Office in
Monett where this
digital format is de-multiplexed back into the original
96 analog lines
before they go into the CO switch, where they are again
converted to
digital. This is a digital-to-analog conversion, and is
followed by
another analog-to-digital conversion in the switch
itself. These
additional D/A and A/D conversions negate the 56k
protocol. Customers
served by these units MAY see a slight improvement in
connect speed over
what they have been seeing, but 56k is impossible for
them. These
customer's modems will function as normal 28.8 or 33.6
modems only.
Please understand that this is a limitation placed on
users in Monett by
the phone company, and there is nothing we can do about
it. We have been
working on this issue for over a month trying to get the
policy changed,
and have been told that this is the way it is, and that
it will NOT be
changed. We will continue to pursue it through other
channels, but it is
allowed by the FCC and Missouri Public Service
Commission, so we really
have no grounds to challenge it on.
If you have questions about your phone line's ability to
handle 56k,
please check the "Line Test Tool" link on the
left side of our home page.
This will test your line with your modem and try to make
a determination
as to whether your line is capable of 56k or not. It is
NOT 100%
foolproof, but if it says you CAN do it, you most likely
can. If it says
your line is not capable, or if it can't make a
determination, don't give
up. You may still be able to do it. Give us a call and
we'll discuss further options.
Please read the information, especially the FAQ's, under
the 56k.com and
v90.com links as well. These will explain how things work
and help you
determine what you need to do to take advantage of this
new service.
In our tests, which have been going on for several weeks,
we have seen
connection speeds up to 50.333K. Your actual speed, as
always, will
depend upon the quality of your phone line, since that
will be the only
analog part of the connection. This analog line is
usually the
determining factor in connection speeds, as there is no
loss in a digital
line.
Please feel free to contact us if you have questions. Due
to the
unusually high number of phone calls, if you have a
general question,
please e-mail us at help@mo-net.com for fastest response.
